The Union wants students to be voting on the issues that they want to discuss. So that’s why the Union has the option for students to call a referendum.
A referendum is a vote by the whole of an electorate on a specific question or questions put to it by the Students’ Union. This will be hosted electronically to ensure that is accessible by as many students as possible; for instance part time students who are not on campus all the time.
Under the Unions current constitution (the governing document) a referendum can be called by a petition signed by 200 members of the Union or by a 2/3 majority vote at a General Meeting.
The new draft constitution currently says the following regarding referendums:
A Referendum may be called on any issue by:
- a resolution of the Trustees;
- a majority vote of the Student Senate; or
- a Secure Petition signed by at least 150 Members.
- Subject to Clause 11.2, a resolution may only be passed by Referendum if at least 400 Members cast a vote in the Referendum and a majority of the votes cast are in favour of the resolution.
- Referenda shall be conducted in accordance with this Constitution and the Bye-Laws.
